In the cache of blockbusters falling in and spawning from The Conjuring universe, The Devil Made Me Do It is certainly not as low bar as Annebelle or The Nun, but it is a little closer on the scales to those flops than it is to the successful original. It is obvious from the beginning that the money is still there. The movie looks and sounds amazing and the ensemble of A-list actors put out a heartfelt performance that almost makes the boring and predictable writing seem halfway charming. But blockbuster money can only push a cookie cutter storyline so far and, in the end, the flick's jump scare tactics just feel cheap and unearned. Regardless, blockbuster money does push this film far enough to deliver a fun watch and one that has just enough story and guts to hold a halfway engaged audience.
