In an era of ultra slow burn psychological thrillers and psychedelic micro indie flicks trending high in the horror genre, The Devil Below finds its success with a more classic creature feature feel. It's steady pacing, earnest story telling, and incredible effects and creature makeups out way its sins, of which there are a few. Namely, fleeting moments of cheap CGI and a couple flatly written characters that sour the otherwise interesting ensemble of characters. In the end The Devil Below is a really fun watch and it doesn't push to be a whole lot more which, in this case, was just right.
